Google has added a new experimental feature to Gmail: Mail Goggles. Its aim is to make sure that you really want to send an email by asking you simple math problems to verify you’re in your right mind. By default, it is set to only be active late at night on weekends (the time they say you’re most likely to need it).

Perhaps this will be a great feature for some; however, a more useful feature would be to delay sending an email 5 or 10 seconds after you press Send. That way if you catch an error, you can cancel the email and correct your mistake.

UPDATE: I just noticed that I titled this post “New Gmail Feature: Are You Sure You Want to Sent That?” Perhaps WordPress should consider adding a similar feature for bloggers that asks, “Are you sure you want to publish that?”

This morning I woke up and felt around on my nightstand for my glasses. They were no where to be found. “That’s odd,” I thought. Since I have 20/800 vision and can’t see clearly more than 4 inches from my face, I always wear my glasses to bed before taking them off and laying them down.

I continued into the bathroom and turned on the lights. It took a moment before I realized that I could clearly see the floor and the walls. Then I remembered I was able to read my clock without squinting. Oh no! I’d slept in my contacts! I quickly removed them and placed them in my lens case, hurriedly adding some storage solution.

In almost twenty years of wearing contacts, that was the first time I’ve ever forgotten to take them out before going to bed. I always do this because wearing your lenses overnight greatly increases your risk of developing cataracts. However, now that it’s all over, it’s fun thinking about how dazed and confused I was in the wee hours of this morning.

Mollie Hemingway comments in her Wall Street Journal article that:

The reality is that the New Atheist campaign, by discouraging religion, won’t create a new group of intelligent, skeptical, enlightened beings. Far from it: It might actually encourage new levels of mass superstition. And that’s not a conclusion to take on faith — it’s what the empirical data tell us.

“What Americans Really Believe,” a comprehensive new study released by Baylor University yesterday, shows that traditional Christian religion greatly decreases belief in everything from the efficacy of palm readers to the usefulness of astrology. It also shows that the irreligious and the members of more liberal Protestant denominations, far from being resistant to superstition, tend to be much more likely to believe in the paranormal and in pseudoscience than evangelical Christians.
