LOI for Thursday, April 14, 2011

This hasn’t been a good week for blogging; however, I do have a few posts “in the oven” that I hope to publish next week. In the meantime, here’s a hodgepodge of Links of Interest:

LOI: American Civil War Sesquicentennial

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. On April 12th, 1861, Confederate forces in Charleston, South Carolina opened fire on Fort Sumter thereby marking the commencement of hostile engagement with the US government. In this edition of Links of Interest, I’ll be linking to Civil War resources which pertain to my local area in Knoxville and East Tennessee.

Finally, although its content doesn’t cover my local area, I’d like to recommend a book on the Civil War. Bruce Catton’s A Stillness at Appomattox: The Army of the Potomac Trilogy is a riveting book of history. One reviewer has commented that if all history were written as well as this book, there would be no need for fiction.

I’ve been working my way through A Stillness at Appomattox during the past month, and Catton makes the final months of the Civil War come alive with his vivid description of the events and the men and women who took part in them. All of Catton’s accounts are taken from documents and interviews; therefore, although it reads like good fiction, the book is completely factual. I highly recommend it.

LOI – Recent Reads on Instapaper

For today’s Links of Interest I’m sharing some of my favorite recent reads from my Instapaper archives. As these are longer articles, I don’t recommend reading them while you’re seated at your computer. Rather you should use a service like Instapaper where you can save these reads for reading later on a device like an iPad, Kindle or mobile phone.

  • The Accidental Activist – NY Times Magazine – A profile of Sean Penn and his humanitarian work in Haiti. The article delves into his motivation for spending much of the past year running a moderately sized and effective humanitarian aid organization working to rebuild a country devastated by last year’s earthquake.
  • The Rapper in Rehab – Christianity Today – “Rising rap star Lecrae seamlessly blends gospel-saturated lyrics with the hooks of southern style hip-hop, and the result is something you have to hear to believe.”
  • Online Poker’s Big Winner – NY Times – The story of Daniel Cates, a 21-year-old self made multimillionaire, who spends his time playing poker online and trying to find balance in his life.

LOI – iPad Edition

Today’s Links of Interest focuses on my favorite tablet computer, the Apple iPad. Ever since I bought my iPad WiFi+3G on launch day last year, it has been my “go-to” computer for casual computing. I do believe it has been my favorite technology purchase ever.

LOI – Resources for the Thinking Christian

Scientism can be loosely defined as the idea that the only things we can know for certain are things which we know through direct observation and experimentation. Under this view, the truth claims of religious faith are summarily dismissed as un-authoritative simply because they can’t be measured via scientific experimentation. Whether we realize it or not, this view is often foundational to much thinking in our Western culture. However, some careful thinking reveals scientism to be a self-refuting philosophy. LOI – WordPress E-Commerce Edition

I’ve recently mentioned that I now prefer to build e-commerce sites using WordPress for the entire setup. In today’s edition of Links of Interest, I’m highlighting a couple of WordPress plugins I’ve used and one I plan on using soon:

  • Shopp – This was the first truly full-featured WordPress plugin I’ve used. You can set it in action here. While it has good capabilities, I wasn’t impressed with how much work it took to get the layout exactly like I wanted it. If you don’t want to mess with the layout too much, I’d say it’s a good solution. Otherwise, check this next link:
  • PHPurchase – Despite a somewhat misleading name for a WordPress e-commerce plugin, I love how this plugin is more concerned with the backend while leaving the frontend display to me. See an example of how I setup a site with PHPurchase at the SeaHope Partners website.
  • Cart66 – Just this week, I learned that PHPurchase has been rebranded as Cart66. WordPress theme developer Jason Schuller has released a great looking “Etsy-style” theme which works with Cart66.

UPDATE: 12/16/2011

  • WooCommerce – In recent months, WooThemes has released their WooCommerce plugin. The plugin is free, and they even offer some free WooCommerce integrated themes as well. In addition, if you can code, you can integrate the plugin into your own theme.

LOI – IT Edition

It has been a long time since the last installment of Links of Interest (LOI), but with my recent return to regular blogging it seemed like a good time to bring it back. Today’s links all have a distinct Information Technology (IT) flavor. Enjoy!
